Finding the best sailing apps for me wasn’t easy. Like most sailors out there with a phone, I tried my share of sailing apps before choosing the ones I use on a regular basis. And to be honest, I don’t believe there’s such thing as “best”. No, it’s just “the ones I like”. Even though in this list there are some apps I consider to be the best (like Navionics for navigation), the rest are just a few in a sea of options (pun intended). For example, the wind forecast app. There are dozens who are doing the same thing: give a more or less accurate forecast of the wind. Similar graphics, similar forecasts, similar features…you choose the one you feel more comfortable with. The same goes for most of the other apps on this list.

If you ask me, the minimum sailing apps you need are for navigation, wind forecast, and tide. But there are specific situations when I’m happy to happy a certain app. For example, I always keep OnCourse open when sailing between the Greek islands, where there’s a lot of commercial and ferry traffic. That’s the reason most of the apps I use are free, except Navionics. I think you can get all the information you need without paying extra. Yeah, you get some fancy animations or graphics, but when you’re interested only in functionality, those don’t matter. I should probably mention that I’m an iPhone user so my experience is only with the iOS version of these apps. I haven’t tried all navigation apps, but from the ones I did, Boating by Navionics is by far the best navigation app for sailing. It has every feature I need, including a nautical chart that’s accurate 99.99% of the time. It also has great information for anchorage, sometimes you can find user-submitted photos and their latest major update introduced AIS functionalities. You can track your routes to check them later if you need it, it tracks speed and most of the info you usually need.

To have full access to its maps and features, you need to pay an annual subscription. But sailors like me, who don’t own a boat and usually sail on chartered boats, know that you never know what to expect from a charter company. The boat’s chart plotter can be good or it can be complete crap (not working or last updated a few years ago). That’s why I never rely on them and Navionics is the most important sailing app on my phone.

Price: Paid, but they have a free trial with full features. Year subscriptions are available and pricing depends on what map you need. For example, the Mediterranean & Black Sea (the one I use most often) is 20 Euros (around $22). USA is $19, US & Canada is $26 (35 CAD) and UK, Ireland & Holland is 40 Euros (£35). Every time I sail in an area with a lot of commercial traffic, I almost always use OnCourse. Especially at night. What you do is register your boat and your phone starts acting like an AIS device. You broadcast your position and you get information about all the vessels around you. It also has a collision alert and you get a loud, scary sound every time you’re on a collision course with a ship. It’s not nice at all when you hear that sound and see that a 900-feet ship is closing in on you. Of course, relying only on this app is the dumbest thing you can do. Nothing beats setting up night watches and keeping your eyes open. But having a little help doesn’t hurt.

Price: Free. OnCourse Plus available at $57.99 per year, not necessary for basic use.

Windfinder

There are countless weather apps and usually, it comes down to personal preference. I’ve used Windy, PredictWind or WindGuru, but the one I liked most is Windfinder. I learned about it from a friend in Athens and it’s the app I’m currently using. I like that you can pinpoint a spot and then simply use a slider to check the forecast for the upcoming 7 days. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m using the free version, but on my iPhone app, I can’t find some of the features, like choosing a spot on the map. So I use it mostly in Chrome on mobile. But if you’re a beginner, having an app like that is really useful. Not to mention that even experienced sailors tend to forget the knots they don’t use so often. So having an app there on your phone won’t hurt. You can even give your kids something to do when they’re bugging you on the boat.

Price: Free. No freaking add-ons, paid features, anything. Simple and perfect. It even has a Columbia store for you to browse.

Like the knots app, it’s only available for iPhones, but Tides Near Me is a good alternative for Android phones.

These are, in my opinion, the best sailing apps available right now. Like I said in the intro, there are plenty of sailing apps for both iPhone and Android. For almost every app on this list, there are at least 2-3 good alternatives. In the end, it all comes down to what you like and how much are you willing to spend.
